My Teaching Philosophy

I am Kelly Cheung, a Grade 3 teacher in B.C. Canada. My teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. I believe that every student, especially our newcomer and English Language Learner (ELL) students, deserves a learning environment where they feel safe, respected, and genuinely valued.

My goal is to cultivate a classroom where diversity isn't just acknowledged, but celebrated. This means actively seeking out and incorporating the rich cultural backgrounds and experiences of each student into our daily learning. By creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, we empower all students to participate fully, express themselves authentically, and build meaningful connections with one another.

Equity

In a classroom, equity means adjusting teaching, support, and resources so every student can succeed. For example, some students may need extra time, visual supports, or differentiated instruction.

Diversity

This refers to the range of differences students bring—culture, language, abilities, family background, and perspectives. A diverse classroom is rich with varied experiences that can deepen learning.

Inclusion

Inclusion is about creating a classroom where all students feel valued, safe, and able to participate. It’s not just having diverse students present, but ensuring they are actively engaged and respected.
